Have you ever noticed yourself bleeding from the gums while brushing teeth or felt your teeth have increased in length due to gum receding? Gum diseases are one of the most serious oral conditions that one can be diagnosed with as it entirely jeopardizes oral health and aesthetics.

Periodontitis and gingivitis are two of the most prominent gum diseases out there. They are most often caused due to the accumulated plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth that release acids that have the ability to cause tissue decay. Their symptoms include decay of gums, gum receding, loosening of teeth from their sockets, bone deterioration, bad breath, bleeding, the release of pus, etc. It is said that periodontitis has no real cure, but can only be controlled.

What Is Arestin?

Arestin is a boon to people with gum diseases. It is a highly powerful antibiotic drug that kills the microbes in the infected tissues. The dentist would carefully examine the severity of the condition and place the drug in between the gums and tooth roots. This way, the medication would be in constant contact with the infected tissues. There are distinctly two ways of using Arestin:

In the gum pockets: The dentist would place just the right amount of medication on the gum tissues and in the gum pockets. This is done as the gum pockets are where the maximum accumulation of microbes happen.

After scaling and root planing: Scaling and root planing are procedures used to get rid of the accumulated plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth crown and root. The dentist would place Arestin just below the gum line right after oral cleaning. The growth of microbes can be restricted in these regions.

Arestin prevents the growth of bacteria in the infected region for at least 3 months from the day of application. Other effects of periodontitis such as bleeding, redness, and inflammation can be prevented for at least a month.
